Labor secretary pledges $49M in aid for Michigan

By AP

Romulus, MI – Romulus, MI (AP) - U.S. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis has announced an additional $49 million in federal aid to help Michigan workers who lose their jobs because of foreign trade. The announcement comes Tuesday as Solis and other cabinet officials are touring Michigan, Ohio and Indiana. The region has been hard hit by the loss of automotive and other manufacturing jobs.

Solis made the announcement at a General Motors Corp. plant in Romulus. GM filed for bankruptcy this week.

Solis says the money will be provided for career training and other services for workers who lose their jobs for trade-related reasons. The Department of Labor is providing nearly $60 million this fiscal year to assist Michigan's trade-affected workers including the funds announced Tuesday.
