MSU's non-tenure track faculty vote to unionize

By AP

EAST LANSING, Mich. – EAST LANSING, MI (AP) - Non-tenure track faculty members at Michigan State University have voted to unionize.

Non-tenure track faculty lack long-term job security and generally get lower pay than tenure-track teachers.

Organizer Richard Manderfield says Friday's vote was 240 to 113 in favor of unionizing.

He says the group will draft a contract proposal and hopes to begin negotiations in the fall.

University Associate Vice President Terry Curry says Michigan State respects collective bargaining rights and will seek an open relationship with union members.

The 650 covered faculty members will be affiliated with American Federation of Teachers.
