EAST LANSING, MI – EAST LANSING, MI (WKAR) - Michigan State University took another step Monday toward building a $550 million nuclear research facility on campus. MSU signed an agreement with the US Department of Energy for funding for the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, known as FRIB.
FRIB will extend the research at MSU's National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory and allow nuclear scientists to study rare isotopes - unstable atoms that offer clues to how the universe evolved.
The project is expected to take 10 years to complete. It's estimated FRIB will employ about 400 people and generate more than $180 million in state tax revenue.
