Tiger Stadium demolition resumes after ruling

By AP

DETROIT – DETROIT (AP) - A few hours after a judge refused to stop it, the demolition of historic Tiger Stadium began again in Detroit.

Crews used a backhoe to tear away chunks of the upper deck along the third base line, causing debris to rain down.

Dozens of onlookers gathered outside the old ballpark to witness the destruction as it got back under way around 1:50 p.m. yesterday.

Earlier, A Wayne County judge rejected a request by the Old Tiger Stadium Conservancy to issue a preliminary injunction preventing further demolition of the stadium. He also lifted a temporary restraining order issued Friday afternoon that halted work begun just hours earlier.

Tiger Stadium opened in 1912 as Navin Field. The Tigers departed for Comerica Park after the 1999 season.
