LANSING, MI – Lt. Gov. John Cherry says Michigan lawmakers should restore money for the state's primary publicly funded college scholarship program.
Cherry said in a teleconference Tuesday that while the Michigan Promise scholarship program may not be immune from budget cuts, lawmakers should not completely eliminate it. Cherry, who is seeking the Democratic nomination to run for governor in 2010, says eliminating the program would break a promise to the 96,000
students expecting to receive some money from it this fall.
The Republican-led Senate voted last week to eliminate the program and save $140 million in the budget year that starts Oct. 1. The House may try to restore money to the program designed to give up to $4,000 to qualifying students during their academic careers.
