LANSING, MI – Michigan's unemployment rate jumped by more than a full percentage point in June to 15.2%

AUDIO:
The state Department of Energy, Labor and Economic Growth says manufacturing job losses were the chief cause of Michigan's worsening jobless rate. But the ranks of jobseekers also grew as people sought seasonal employment.

All told, there are about 740,000 people in Michigan who are unemployed and looking for work. When workers who have given up looking, or are working part-time but seeking full-time employment are included, there are more than a million people in Michigan who are either unemployed or underemployed.

But some state officials are hoping July's numbers will hold some good news for a change -- now that Chrysler and General Motors are out of bankruptcy, and calling workers back.
