Mich. AG: Detroit can have more charter schools

By AP

LANSING, MI – Michigan's attorney general says Detroit can have more charter schools because the school district's head count has dropped below 100,000.

Cox wrote a legal opinion Monday in response to a question from the state superintendent.

Detroit Public Schools was recently a first-class district. The designation prevents community colleges from opening charter schools in the city.

But Cox says Detroit is no longer a first-class district because enrollment fell to about 93,000.

That means the Michigan Department of Education must give state funding if a tribal community college or a Detroit community college want to open a charter school in Detroit.
