Michigan reps discuss road funding woes with feds

By AP

LANSING, MI – Members of Michigan's congressional delegation have met with U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood to discuss road funding options.

Michigan risks losing federal matching money for road construction starting in 2011 because the state may not have enough cash of its own to spend on the projects. That puts more than 130 projects worth more than $700 million in jeopardy from 2011 through 2013.

Republican U.S. Rep. Candice Miller of Macomb County's Harrison Township says four states currently are working with the federal government on alternative payment plans for matching funds to keep road projects alive. Miller wants Michigan to do the same.

Reps. Mark Schauer, D-Battle Creek, and Vernon Ehlers, R-Grand Rapids, also attended Friday's meeting.
