Stabenow expects health care deal by end of year

By AP

LANSING, MI – U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow says she's confident a health care overhaul will pass this year.

The Michigan Democrat says the issue is complicated, making it easy for opponents to "scare people" with "misinformation."

Stabenow spoke with reporters in Lansing Monday after discussing health care legislation with public health officials.

She sits on the Senate Finance Committee, which is working on a compromise plan. Stabenow says her biggest concern now is that tax credits or subsidies won't go far enough to make health premiums affordable.

Stabenow's meeting with health officials wasn't a public town hall-style event like those that have been disrupted by noisy demonstrators.

Stabenow is unlikely to hold a town hall on health care.
