Mich. Legislature returns for rare voting days

By AP

LANSING, MI – The Michigan Legislature returns to work this week after meeting very little over the past month and a half.

The Senate is expected to be in session Tuesday, while the House plans to convene Wednesday.

Most lawmakers have had little to do in July and August while legislative leaders and Gov. Jennifer Granholm continue to discuss the state budget behind closed doors.

Since late June, both chambers have had just two formal days of session during which legislators took votes on the House and Senate floor. Some committee hearings have been held, though more are scheduled for this week.

Various groups also are planning to hold news conference and rallies against proposed budget cuts. The deadline to OK a new budget is six weeks away.
