EAST LANSING, MI – There are more than a million people who are unemployed or underemployed in Michigan.

AUDIO:
Michigan's July jobless rate of 15% reflects people who are out of work and looking for jobs. There are 731,000 unemployed people in Michigan who applied for jobs recently. But that number climbs to almost 1.2 million people when you include those who've given up looking for work, or are working part-time but looking for full-time employment. That's roughly a fifth of Michigan workers who are either unemployed or under-employed.

Some of those part-timers are former full-time workers who've had their hours reduced. Or they are workers who could only find part-time work as full-time jobs in fields like manufacturing and construction have evaporated.
