Groups urge Midwest governors to seek clean energy

By AP

TRAVERSE CITY, MI – Environmental groups want Midwestern governors to push harder for an economy based on clean energy.

The groups are releasing a letter Tuesday to governors representing states that agreed in 2007 to cooperate on reducing carbon pollution.

It asks them to seek legislation requiring utilities to produce at least 25 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2025.

Additionally, it calls for the region to improve conservation of electricity and natural gas.

And it urges the governors to enact a regional cap-and-trade program to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also pushing for a nationwide policy.

More than three dozen groups signed the letter, sent in advance of a Midwestern Governors Association Jobs and Energy Summit in Detroit next month.
