LANSING, MI – Immunization and common sense would help Michigan avoid serious outbreaks of two types of flu this coming season. That was the message from two state agencies Tuesday at a Lansing news conference.

Janet Olzewski is Director the Michigan Department of Community Health. She says the vaccine for the seasonal flu is already available and encourages immunization soon for "at risk" groups. The new H1N1 or "Swine" flu vaccine is expected to become available in mid-October.
Officials spoke on what was the first day of school in much of the state---in part to allay families' growing concern over a second wave of "Swine" flu after last Spring's outbreak. They encourage common sense measures like regular hand washing and staying home from work or school if you feel sick.
