Lansing, MI – US Chamber of Commerce President Thomas Donohue says Michigan workers and businesses can recover from the recession by expanding trade with other countries. Donahue spoke Tuesday at the annual meeting of the state Chamber of Commerce.
Donahue says more than half a million jobs in Michigan are supported by trade. He says investing in that sector could create tens of thousands of new jobs, "I think the other thing Michigan has to do is start telling itself the truth and the truth is that while the export of heavy manufacturing jobs was a serious problem, it didn't come from trade."
Donahue says the best way to create new jobs is to help businesses create new markets abroad. He says the Obama administration should act on pending free trade agreements and avoid setting "Buy American" requirements.
