BWL chilled water plant starts operation downtown

By Rob South, WKAR News

LANSING, MI – The Lansing Board of Water and Light on Wednesday dedicated its new chilled water facility in downtown Lansing. The plant will provide air conditioning for many downtown office buildings. BWL general Manager Peter Lark says the new facility will save its customers money.

"The plant is 60% more efficient than the old one, which keeps steam costs low for customers and translates into drmatic reductions in greenhouse gases," he said.

The old chilled water plant is being removed from the Ottawa Street Power Station as part of the $60-million renovation of the historic structure.

The Peffley Chilled water plant is named in honor of retired BWL executive Roy Peffley, who oversaw the construction of the Ericson Power Plant in the 1970's.
