DCH director urges people to get flu shots

LANSING, MI – Michigan Department of Community Health Director Janet Olszewski delivers Governor Granholm's radio address this week. She says the threat of an H1N1 flu pandemic makes it particularly important for people to get a seasonal flu shot.

"The seasonal flu shot will not protect you from the H1N1 virus," she says. "However, it will do three things: First, it will protect you from the seasonal flu. Second, it will prevent you from getting both the H1N1 and the seasonal flu. And finally, the seasonal flu shot will decrease the likelihood of the two flu strains mixing together and mutating."

Olszewski says it's also important for people to get the H1N1 vaccine when it becomes available in October.
