Bill would force earlier Michigan budget deadline

By AP

LANSING, MI – A bipartisan group of first-term House lawmakers is sponsoring a constitutional amendment that would require the state to have a budget in place by July 1.

The group said Thursday the state's second government shutdown since 2007 prompted the move. The proposal calls for lawmakers to forfeit their pay for each day budget bills aren't presented to the governor after the summer deadline.

July 1 is the start of the fiscal year for most states. Michigan and Alabama are the only two that start on Oct. 1.

Lawmakers sent an interim budget to the governor early this morning to keep the state running for the next 30 days.

Michigan lawmakers make $79,650 per year, or just over $300 a day.
