Public disclosure comes with Mich. schools budget

By AP

LANSING, MI – Michigan's public schools will be required to make more of their financial information available on the Internet under terms of a budget bill that soon will be signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

The K-12 schools bill cuts funding by the equivalent of $165 per student. Schools will get about 3 percent less money overall this academic year than during 2008-09.

The budget legislation passed late Thursday by the Legislature includes several policy changes that will affect how schools operate. Among them is a requirement to include a link from Internet home pages to detailed budget information.

A Granholm spokeswoman said Friday that the governor will sign the bill.
