Experts expect fierce competition for holiday jobs

By AP

FLINT, MI – Michigan residents looking to make a little extra money for the holidays are going to find fierce competition for seasonal jobs in the coming months.

The Flint Journal reported Sunday that employment experts say many retailers expect to hire fewer workers this year for temporary cashier, stocking and other positions.

And landing one of those jobs will be harder than usual because of competition from thousands of unemployed people.

Employment experts say people hoping to find a seasonal job should apply early and submit applications to multiple retail outlets.

Chicago-based outplacement assistance firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc. says people need to be persistent and work hard to reach out in-person to prospective employers.

Challenger expects retail hiring to be slightly better than last year.
