EAST LANSING, MI – East Lansing school administrators and parents will begin talking this week about how to tackle looming cuts in state funding.

The district has already reduced spending for the current school year by more than $1 million. Now, East Lansing schools are faced with more cuts that could add up to an additional $2 million.
At a school board meeting tonight, superintendent David Chapin will present some options to address the sudden reduction in funding. Chapin says he'll propose a plan for re-configuring grades and that could mean closing some school buildings.
"I think when the dust settles, we'll have a recommendation that will have us using less than our nine facilities," Chapin says. "Unfortunately, it's a new era and these are different conditions and we're going to have to handle our facilities and our resources differently in the future."
Chapin will also address a special meeting for parents tomorrow. That's scheduled for 7 p.m. at MacDonald Middle School.
