Gov Granholm to hit colleges, urge scholarship's return

By AP

LANSING, MI –
Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm will visit universities over the next two weeks to campaign for the revival of the Michigan Promise scholarship.

The governor is in a public tussle with Republican Senate leaders over funding for the scholarship. Lawmakers this fall eliminated the money that was to go to 96,000 college students.

She says the scholarship funding can be paid for by shrinking a scheduled increase in a tax credit for the working poor. She called for reinstating it during her weekly radio address Friday.

Senate Republicans say the state no longer can afford to give students up to $4,000.

Granholm plans to visit Michigan State University, the University of Michigan, Central Michigan University, Western Michigan University, Grand Valley State University, Saginaw Valley State University and Oakland Community College.
