55 MI state troopers go back to work

LANSING, MI –
Fifty-five of 100 state troopers laid off this summer were back at work Monday. The Legislature budgeted money to rehire the troopers last month. But Governor Granholm delayed re-hiring the troopers. Granholm said she didn't want to restore the jobs if the troopers would be laid off again if there are more budget cuts in January.

Shanon Banner is with the Michigan State Police department.

"The governor just wanted to ensure that we'd be able to sustain them throughout the fiscal year, and that decision was made on November 5," she says. "The Treasury Department confirmed that the revenues were there and that we could bring these troopers back."

Banner says there are 37 laid-off troopers still hoping to eventually be rehired by the state.
