More Mich. school districts operate at a deficit

By AP

LANSING, MI –
The number of Michigan school districts operating in a financial deficit is growing.

The state says Wednesday that 41 districts preliminarily have reported that they were in deficit for the fiscal year that ended in June. That is up from 27 districts the year before.

The financial situation for schools likely will continue to get worse because districts face a minimum funding reduction of $292 per student this academic year. Those cuts are not reflected in the latest count of districts in financial trouble.

Detroit, Ypsilanti, Pontiac, Brighton, Benton Harbor and Ishpeming are among the Michigan districts self-reporting deficits.
