Lansing's Fraternal Order of Police and Mayor's office reach contract deal

LANSING, MI –
The City of Lansing and the union which represents its police officers have reached a deal that averts 14 layoffs in the department.

The agreement announced today reduces holiday shift premiums and overtime pay. It changes officer work-days from 10 hours to 12 hours. The plan saves the city about $450,000 between now and April.

Last month Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero unveiled an executive order to cut $3-million from the budget. His plan includes 9 furlough days for non-emergency employees and a 10% reduction in controllable operating and capital expenses.

City officials say reduced state revenue is partly to blame for the midyear budget adjustment.
