GM relocation event reveals workers plans

LANSING, MI –
Hundreds of Tennessee autoworkers planning to follow jobs to Lansing began getting acquainted with their future hometown Thursday. About two dozen Lansing-area companies and municipalities held a relocation fair in Spring Hill, Tennessee to offer options in housing and transportation for migrating GM workers.

Denise Maurer is Director of Referral Services for Coldwell Banker Hubbell real estate in Lansing. She says some people making the move won't be putting down roots in Lansing.

"Some are retiring in a year and a half and they're gonna rent here and rent their house out there, and then move back," she says. "So I have several people that are just trying to bide their time until they're retiring, which is interesting as well."

UAW contracts with the automaker give some workers the option to relocate and keep working. About 425 Tennessee employees are expected to begin arriving next month for jobs at the company's Delta Township plant.
