Mich. looks to reuse 2 recently shuttered prisons

By AP

LANSING, MI –
Michigan continues looking for federal or out-of-state inmates to fill two recently shuttered prisons after reaching a deal with Pennsylvania to house 1,000 of its prisoners.

Michigan Corrections Department spokesman John Cordell said Tuesday reuse is possible for two prisons. They're the Standish Maximum Correctional Facility about 145 miles north of Detroit and Hiawatha Correctional Facility in the eastern Upper Peninsula.

On Monday, Pennsylvania announced plans to send 2,000 inmates within two months to the Muskegon Correctional Facility in Michigan and the Green Rock Correctional Center in Chatham, Va.

Cordell says Michigan is drafting a new proposal to house some California inmates. An earlier offer was rejected in August.
