Forecasters say occasionally heavy snow, stiff winds and frigid temperatures will greet Michigan residents near lakes Michigan and Superior as 2010 begins.
The National Weather Service says a foot of snow or more could fall by Saturday evening from Charlevoix to Manistee along the Lake Michigan shoreline in the northwest Lower Peninsula. Farther south, more than 8 inches was possible from Ludington to South Haven.
Winds gusting to 25 mph threatened to create whiteout conditions in the hardest-hit areas along Lake Michigan.
Mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the 20s were expected Friday in the southeastern Lower Peninsula.
Upper Peninsula residents' reputation for winter toughness would be tested as forecasters said up to 14 inches of snow could fall Friday along Lake Superior.
