Michigan solar, wind firms get federal tax credits

Michigan companies that make solar panels, wind turbines and other alternative energy products are getting more than $200 million in tax credits through the federal stimulus package.

President Barack Obama announced the awarding of $2.3 billion in clean energy manufacturing tax credits to companies nationwide on Friday.

Hemlock Semiconductor Corp. will get manufacturing tax credits worth up to nearly $142 million through the program. The company is expanding a solar cell component facility near Saginaw. Dow Chemical Co. and Dow Corning Corp. are among other Michigan companies getting tax breaks connected to solar projects.

Merrill Technologies Group will get a $22 million tax credit for a wind tower project near Saginaw.
