Stupak, other Dems still mulling MI governor run

By AP

LANSING, MI –
U.S. Rep. Bart Stupak is heading to Detroit to get a better feel for whether he wants to join other Democrats running for governor.

Stupak said in a phone conversation Thursday that he has been talking to supporters and will meet Saturday with party activists in southeast Michigan to weigh a possible run.

The congressman from Menominee says he could be tied up for weeks trying to keep language restricting how abortions are covered by insurance in the federal health care overhaul bill.

He knows his opposition to abortion could prove a hurdle to his possible candidacy among Democrats who favor abortion rights.

But the wide-open governor's race presents an unusual opportunity. For that reason alone, he says, "you have to take a look at it."
