Educators wait on Granholm school funding plan

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Gov. Jennifer Granholm says she will draw the line against further cuts to education funding and restore Michigan's main college scholarship program.

But the Democratic governor hasn't yet said exactly how she plans to pay for those proposals and Republicans say they will fight back if she proposes tax increases. That leaves some educators skeptical about efforts to protect funding as Michigan's new budget debates begins.

Granholm on Thursday is scheduled to detail her budget proposal for the fiscal year starting Oct. 1.

The governor and the Legislature must deal with a projected $1.6 billion shortfall, including a possible deficit of more than $420 million for Michigan schools.
