APNewsBreak: MLB's Bowman won't run for Mich. gov

By AP

LANSING, MI – Major League Baseball official Robert Bowman has decided against getting into Michigan's Democratic race for governor.

The former state treasurer formed a committee last week to explore a run, but said Monday in a release that he has decided not to begin a campaign.

He says he would enjoy the challenge but is "just not able to commit to run at this time."

The 54-year-old Bowman works in New York City but has a summer home in the northern Michigan community of Harbor Springs. He's also president of the Michigan Education Trust.

The only two declared Democratic candidates are state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero. House Speaker Andy Dillon has indicated he plans to get in soon. Former Genesee County Treasurer Dan Kildee also may run.
