KALAMAZOO, MI –
A new study says corporate-run charter schools tend to be more segregated by race and income than nearby public schools.
Western Michigan University professor Gary Miron and colleagues say charter schools generally are "strongly racially segregative" compared to surrounding districts.
The study was jointly published by the Arizona State University and the University of Colorado. It's based on 2006-07 data from 968 schools run by education management groups.
The pro-charter school Mackinac Center for Public Policy says charters teach only 3 percent of children and have little effect on segregation.
The Midland-based center says authorities should ignore the study while working to expand educational opportunities for all children.
