Granholm, Bernero get into tiff over Toyota in MI

By AP

LANSING, MI –

After Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero lashed out at Toyota Motor Corp. for a what he called a "long-standing pattern of deception," the woman he wants to replace in the governor's office took exception.

Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm said Thursday that Michigan has worked hard to attract Toyota's research-and-development center and suppliers, and should be less harsh toward the Japanese automaker.

Granholm says Toyota must do everything it can to fix a problem with faulty gas pedals in millions of recalled vehicles, but added she hopes "people would be angry about anybody who suggests" that Toyota and its suppliers aren't welcome.

Bernero said Wednesday in a release that he's "not so willing to forgive and forget" what he sees as Toyota's deception.

He's one of three Democrats running for the governorship.
