Michigan House plan would legalize more fireworks

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Some fireworks that are currently illegal in Michigan could be legalized and sold to help raise money for state government under terms of budget-related legislation advancing in the state House.

The Democratic-led House Appropriations Committee passed a bill Thursday mostly along party lines that would raise an estimated $2.6 million to preserve community fire protection grants by legalizing more fireworks in the state. Businesses that sold the fireworks would be charged a fee that goes to the state.

Some details of the plan are yet to be determined. Democrats say they will introduce separate legislation needed to legalize the fireworks.

Democrats say if the plan does not get enacted the budget will be cut.
