LANSING, MI – The state House has voted to repeal Michigan's mandatory motorcycle helmet law.
The Michigan Public Radio Network's Rick Pluta reports.
AUDIO: The measure would allow anyone over the age of 21 who buys a special $20,000 insurance policy to ride without a helmet. Riders younger than 21 or who don't have the policy would still have to wear a helmet.
The helmet law repeal cleared the House by a commanding bipartisan majority. The state Senate also appears to have enough votes in support of repealing the three-decade-old helmet law to send the bill to Governor Granholm's desk.
But the governor supports the helmet requirement, and, if the bill reaches her desk, she is very likely to veto it. She has vetoed bills to roll back Michigan's helmet law twice before.
