LANSING, MI –

A coalition is awarding money to clean-up efforts in Saginaw Bay as a pitch to the EPA for federal funds.

AUDIO:
Saginaw Bay, nestled to the west of Michigan's thumb, is filled with toxic chemicals, has low oxygen levels, and has rampant degradation of habitat and wetlands. Scientist Mike Murray, say that's why the region was one of five selected in the Great Lakes to receive the money from the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition.

"So a lot of problems there, but definitely a lot of potential for restoration as well," he says.

The coalition has a relatively small pot of money to work with. But organizers say that money will help make the case to Congress and the EPA for federal funding.
