Knapps could be redeveloped soon

By Rob South, WKAR News

LANSING, MI – The former Knapps Department store in downtown Lansing could be renovated into a mix of retail, office and residential space. The Eyde Company plans to spend $20-million to renovate the space. The Eydes have owned the building since the early '80's.

The first offices of the family business were in this building.

"It was really a unique time for them and for me growing up. And being able to visit here and be a part of things" said Nick Eyde. "And from that standpoint it's a very important piece for us historically and for the city. And that's why it's important."

Eyde said the company will move back to the building when the renovation is finished.

The J.W. Knapps Department store opened its doors in 1937. It closed in 1980.

Its redevelopment will depend on the Eyde Corporation getting several tax credits, including a state Renaissance Zone designation, Brownfield tax credits and state and federal historic tax credits.
