FREEMAN TOWNSHIP, MI – Federal authorities are trying to determine where nearly three dozen guns found in rural Clare County came from and who they belong to.
Special Agent Donald Dawkins tells The Associated Press that the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are examining serial numbers as part of their investigation into Tuesday's discovery.
The Sheriff's Department says a man found a rifle hidden under a log while cutting firewood in Freeman Township, about 110 miles north of Lansing. The man found another 30 guns before notifying police, who seized the weapons and found three handguns in the same area.
Dawkins says the 29 handguns and five long guns found thus far are modern weapons and hadn't been there long, but investigators have found no indication of recent human activity.
