Red Wings' Howard says he needs short-term memory

By AP

DETROIT – Red Wings goaltender Jimmy Howard says he needs to have short-term memory after giving up four goals in two straight games to the Phoenix Coyotes.

Detroit coach Mike Babcock said Monday he's confident the rookie will bounce back.

The two-time defending Western Conference champions will host Phoenix in Game 4 Tuesday night, trailing 2-1 in the first-round series.

Coyotes goalie Ilya Bryzgalov was announced as a finalist for the Vezina Trophy, an award for the NHL's best in the net, after helping Phoenix set records for wins and points this season.

If Bryzgalov can beat Detroit two more times, he will lift the franchise to the second round of the playoffs for the first time since 1987, when it was in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
