LANSING, MI –

Oakland County Clerk Ruth Johnson is joining the crowded Republican field for secretary of state.

The 55-year-old from Holly also was a state representative from 1999-2004. And businessman Dick DeVos picked Johnson to be his running mate in his unsuccessful 2006 run against Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm.

GOP activists will nominate their favorite in August.

Republicans already running include Calhoun County Clerk Anne Norlander, state Sens. Cameron Brown of Sturgis and Michelle McManus of Lake Leelanau, and state Rep. Paul Scott of Grand Blanc.

Wayne State University law professor Jocelyn Benson won the Democratic secretary of state endorsement Saturday.

Republican incumbent Terri Lynn Land can't run again because of term limits.
