LANSING, MI –
House Speaker Andy Dillon has filed 30,000 petition signatures to get on the Democratic gubernatorial ballot.
Dillon's campaign turned in the petitions Wednesday to the secretary of state. Candidates must have at least 15,000 valid signatures to qualify for the Aug. 3 primary ballot.
Dillon's Democratic rivals, Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero and state Rep. Alma Wheeler Smith, haven't turned in petitions yet. Attorney Geoffrey Fieger plans to decide later this week if he'll enter the race.
Of the five Republicans running for governor, only U.S. Rep. Pete Hoekstra and businessman Rick Snyder have filed petitions.
Dillon failed to answer one question on an affidavit accompanying the signatures. Campaign spokesman T.J. Bucholz says Dillon will file an amended one Thursday.
