LANSING, MI –

The state House Education Committee has approved a measure that would require local school districts to adopt policies to discourage bullying.

AUDIO:
The measure would give school boards six months to adopt anti-bullying policies. House Education Committee chairman Tim Melton says bullying at schools has gotten out of hand.

"I mean the state board already has a policy in place on this, but we're saying locals should have a policy and hopefully they, you know, maybe go farther than what the state board did," he says.

Melton says that includes policies dealing with cyber bullying on social networking websites. But those decisions would be left up to local districts. The measure now goes to the House floor, and Melton says he thinks it will clear the Senate as well.
