LANSING, MI –
Michigan lawmakers are struggling to come up with a compromise plan aimed at saving schools money by persuading thousands of older employees to retire.
The Republican-led Senate and Democrat-led House ended voting Thursday without reaching a deal. Leaders in both chambers said they would continue to negotiate in hopes of reaching a deal as soon as possible.
The Legislature isn't scheduled to come back for voting sessions until Tuesday.
Lawmakers were trying to wrap up the retirement plan this month.
Districts could face state aid cuts in the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1. Lawmakers are hoping a plan that prompts retirements and forces remaining employees to pay 3% of their salaries into pension plans would help schools offset the cuts.
