Four o-clock Tuesday afternoon was the deadline for candidates to file for the August primary ballot in Michigan. Five Republicans and two Democrats are seeking their party's nomination for governor. As Michigan Public Radio's Rick Pluta reports, the filing deadline kicked off the next phase of the campaigns and a TV ad war among Republicans running for governor.

Attorney General Mike Cox took to the airwaves with an ad attacking the congressional voting record of Pete Hoekstra. The Hoekstra campaign says a response will be broadcasting before the end of the week. Venture capitalist Rick Snyder's "One Tough Nerd" ads have been airing on and-off since Super Bowl Sunday to build his name recognition among voters. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard is advertizing on some cable stations. State Senator Tom George says his ads will go up closer to the August third primary.
On the Democratic ballot, House Speaker Andy Dillon will face Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.
This was also the deadline for candidates to file for the state's 15 congressional seats, seats in the Legislature, and local judgeships. The August primary winners will appear on the November general election ballot.
