Senate slows down Michigan fireworks expansion

By AP

LANSING, MI –

It appears that Michigan won't be legalizing higher-grade fireworks in time for this year's Fourth of July.

A key senator has concerns about legislation passed last week by the House that would legalize bottle rockets, firecrackers and other types of fireworks.

Republican Sen. Alan Sanborn of Richmond said Wednesday the House bill is not equitable when it comes to who would be allowed to sell fireworks. Sanborn is chairman of the Senate Economic Development and Regulatory Reform Committee.

Sanborn says it's possible the Senate will take up the fireworks expansion legislation in the fall if his concerns are addressed.

Supporters of the sales expansion say it would raise more than $5 million a year for the state.
