SOUTH BRANCH TOWNSHIP, MI –
Authorities say a wildfire in Michigan's northern Lower Peninsula is about 80% contained.
Spokeswoman Carrie Scott of the U.S. Forest Service says crews are making progress Thursday toward controlling the fire, which has been burning since Tuesday in Crawford County's South Branch Township.
It started when a local resident lost control of a brush fire.
Numerous homes remain evacuated, as police say the charred area is still too dangerous for most people to return.
The fire has destroyed 12 homes and damaged two others. 39 outbuildings also were damaged or gutted.
A second fire that began about 25 miles away at the Camp Grayling National Guard complex has been extinguished.
