Michigan union schedules more education rallies

By AP

LANSING, MI –

Michigan's largest teachers union is organizing more rallies in support of increased funding for public schools.

The Michigan Education Association says more than 40 events across the state are planned for Monday. Teachers, parents and others will ask the state Legislature for what the union calls "stable, equitable and adequate" funding for schools.

The union supports tax increases such as expanding the state sales tax to some services that aren't now taxed. The extra money would go to schools.

Opponents say Michigan residents and businesses can't afford tax increases.

Union events are scheduled for the Detroit and Grand Rapids areas and several counties in-between in southern Michigan.

Events also are set for the northern Lower Peninsula and Upper Peninsula.
