LANSING, MI –
Michigan environmental regulators have denied an air quality permit for a proposed 600-megawatt power plant that Wolverine Power Supply wants to build in Rogers City.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment said Friday its decision was based on a finding by state Public Service Commission staffers that the company had failed to show the plant was needed.
They also said building the plant could boost rates for the average residential customer by nearly 60 percent, or $76.95 a month.
Gov. Jennifer Granholm said the project would hurt Wolverine's customers and increase the cost of doing business in Michigan.
She said it also would damage the environment. The plant would generate electricity primarily from coal and petroleum coke.
