MI legislature throws out needless laws

LANSING, MI –

The Michigan Legislature has done away with an old law that prohibits challenging someone to a duel. Dueling is illegal under modern assault laws.

Democratic state Representative Mark Meadows says there is a special commission that weeds out archaic laws that could harm the state's legal system.

"I would say there's at least hundreds and that we kind of happen on them," he says. "And, like I said, this commission is taking a look at the entire structure to determine what's redundant even."

Lawmakers also approved a repeal of a law that prohibits men from taking a woman to force her into marriage. That is illegal under kidnapping laws.

The repeals now go to the governor for her signature.
