Democratic gubernatorial candidates trade attacks

By AP

WIXOM, MI – The two Democratic candidates for Michigan governor have traded jabs during a testy debate in Wixom.

Monday night's head-to-head meeting was the second and final scheduled debate between House Speaker Andy Dillon and Lansing Mayor Virg Bernero.

The candidates wasted no time going after each other, with Bernero referring to his opponent as "the speaker of the mess" and Dillon calling one of Bernero's claims "utter nonsense."

The two appeared at a Detroit Public TV studio for the debate, which airs later on public broadcasting outlets statewide.

Dillon and Bernero are among the candidates seeking to replace Democratic Gov. Jennifer Granholm, who's term-limited.

Five Republicans are running. The primary is Aug. 3.
